Course Description:

This program has been developed to provide architects and engineers with an introduction to two types of synthetic decking and railing materials for residential and light commercial applications: composite lumber and vinyl (polymeric) systems.

Learning Objectives:

  • Compare the three types of synthetic decking and railing systems that dominated the “wood alternative” market
  • Explain some of the factors driving a consistent demand for alternatives to wood
  • Describe the four key factors that have contributed to the growth of synthetic deck and railing systems
  • Describe some of the main benefits of synthetic decking and railing systems
  • Describe how synthetic decking and railing system manufacturers are addressing the problem of evolving building standards, and some of the standards that are emerging
