Net Zero Energy Home: Design Strategies and System Optimization (BSS68)

Course Description:

This course explores Pennsylvania State University’s GridSTAR Experience Center featuring a Net-Zero Energy Home. The modular building was designed and constructed in collaboration with CertainTeed and Simplex Homes, as well as several other partners. A unique combination of building materials, construction methods, energy management strategies and renewable energy sources were employed to approach net-zero. The home utilizes smart grid technology, optimizing energy use while reducing demand and costs. Penn State received the 2014 Henry C. Turner Prize for Innovation in Construction from the National Building Museum in recognition of the project’s collaborative construction process. The building achieved LEED Platinum.

  • Understand how to manage and interpret hygrothermal and demand response data for a single family residential home
