The Science of Specifying Moisture and Mold Control (BSP50)

Course Description:

As building envelopes get tighter concerns over the potential of mold and moisture in the wall assembly increase. In this course we review the basics of building envelope design as it relates to moisture movement, dew point and relative humidity, air pressure, science of climates, and heat flow. We will also discuss the principle structural details of framed wall assemblies as they pertain to moisture problems and demonstrate how you can use these considerations to earn points toward environmental design codes.

Learning Objectives:

  • Discuss wall assembly defects and failures in the context of building envelope science.
  • Understand sustainable design and green rating standards/codes related to moisture and mold control.
  • Discuss design and construction considerations for wall assemblies that address moisture and mold issues and how this can contribute to green rating standards/codes.
  • Discuss the moisture control advantages and disadvantages of several types of wall sheathing substrates.
