In-Person and Webinar Preview - The Science of Specifying Moisture and Mold Control in Framed Wall Assemblies

The Science of Specifying Moisture and Mold Control in Framed Wall Assemblies (0BSP50)

Course Description:

Participants will explore the basic requirements for a sound building envelope design and the responsibilities commissioning agents have in their role. Participants will also discuss the causes of construction defects and failures. Further detail will explore why there is a need for effective design of the building envelope while considering the movement of air, moisture, and heat into account. Explorations of subjects such as, the environmental and geographical conditions, interior temperature, energy performance, exterior moisture control, and LEED rating system will provide further insight as to how building science relates contributes to sustainable design.

Learning Objectives:

  • Describe how building envelope science addresses defects and failures in wall assemblies
  • Understand sustainable design and green rating standards/codes related to moisture and mold control
  • Describe the following as they relate to the principles of building envelope design: moisture movement, dew point and relative humidity, air pressure and science of climates, and heat flow
  • Discuss design and construction considerations for wall assemblies that address moisture and mold issues and how this can contribute to green rating standards/codes
  • Discuss the principle structural details of framed wall assemblies as they pertain to moisture problems
  • Discuss the moisture control advantages and disadvantages of several types of wall sheathing substrates
